A Brief History of The Women’s Help Center

Founded in 1992 as Restoration Ministries Incorporated of Baton Rouge, d.b.a. North Baton Rouge Women’s Help Center (NBRWHC), the organization provided crisis intervention counseling to women with emergency pregnancy needs through a 24-hour hotline from the home of Charles & Barbara Thomas. In 1995, after outgrowing the home office, a three-year renovation project was completed on a facility on Scenic Highway near Southern University. In 1998, a sister organization, Family Values Resource Institute, Inc. (FVRI), was established to address other visible needs such as GED & Literacy, vocational training, afterschool enrichment, summer enrichment program, etc. In 2001, a 22,000 square foot warehouse was donated to the organization to expand these services. Restoration Ministries Incorporated of Baton Rouge was dissolved; and all services formally merged with the services of FVRI until 2018 when NBRWHC once again became an independent entity and changed its’ name to The Women’s Help Center, Inc. (WHC)

After 30 years, WHC has assisted over 150,000 women, their partner, and their children through crisis intervention care, education, and community resources. A dedicated board of directors of 7 community professionals oversee the organization along with the hard work of ten staff (6 paid and 4 unpaid) who manage the day-to-day activities of the Center.
